The Tamil Nadu Climate Action Tracker is a digital platform developed by the Department of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of Tamil Nadu, in collaboration with Vasudha Foundation. It monitors, visualises, and communicates the State’s climate action progress by integrating state- and district-level data on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, climate vulnerabilities, mitigation and adaptation initiatives, land use, and energy resources. By combining spatial visualisation with sectoral insights, it enables data-driven decision-making, supports decarbonisation planning, and helps track progress towards Tamil Nadu’s net-zero and climate resilience goals.
The Environment, Climate Change and Forests Department, Government of Tamil Nadu, serves as the principal state agency overseeing environmental governance, forest and wildlife conservation, pollution control, and climate action. It acts as the nodal body for planning, coordinating and implementing environment-related policies and programmes not handled by the Pollution Control Board, and drives the State’s climate change mission, forest management, biodiversity protection, afforestation and ecosystem resilience efforts.
The State Government has set up the Tamil Nadu Green Climate Company (TNGCC) to implement the four key Missions of the Government of Tamil Nadu, viz., The Tamil Nadu Climate Change Mission (TNCCM), The Green Tamil Nadu Mission (GTNM), The Tamil Nadu Wetlands Mission (TNWM) and The Tamil Nadu Coastal Restoration Mission (TN SHORE). The Tamil Nadu Green Climate Company(TNGCC) has setup a specialized Project Management Unit (PMU) for coordinating and monitoring project activities under all the three Missions in partnership with the Tamil Nadu Infrastructure Fund Management Corporation Limited (TNIFMC).
Vasudha Foundation is one of the prominent CSO/think tanks with the mission to conserve Vasudha through innovative approaches that can ensure a sustainable and inclusive future for India and Mother Earth. Established in 2010, Vasudha’s approach is largely data driven analysis, creation of data repositories with cross sectoral analysis, along with outreach to ensure resource conservation with the ultimate objective of conserving Mother Earth. Its mission is to promote environment-friendly, socially just and sustainable models of energy by focusing on renewable energy, energy-efficient technologies and lifestyle solutions.
